Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
