Prime Television Selections: Seven Must-Watch Movies In the Days Ahead

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary examines the tyranny of feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of ageing. The veteran actress offers an inspired performance playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity forced into presenting a workout series on TV. Pushed out by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a mysterious and terrifying procedure known as this experimental method. This produces a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque story includes Keira Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a hiatus from covering world issues to board a high-end voyage with an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, and other affluent individuals. Yet once an enigmatic female falls into the sea during the evening and everyone denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, on Netflix

Presence

The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills through this innovative paranormal narrative shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor embraces his unique fame through this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to visit a celebration in Mallorca for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's unconventional method comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, prime time, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, several child abductions has left the children frightened. Once Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain manages to present the character in a likable light. October 14th, late night, on Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's second offering from the filmmaker delivers a espionage tale as sharp as the polo necks used by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to identify a mole among the team from five suspects – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mental battle of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
